Lib Dem-run Hull City Council was named 'Most Improved Council' in the country at last night's Local Government Chronicle Awards, narrowly pipping Northampton Borough Council to the post.
Hull shares a similarly story to Northampton, having been Labour-run from 1970 to 2002, and Lib Dem-run since 2007, with a spell of 'no overall control' in between.
Commenting at the awards, held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel, Council Leader Brian Hoare (Lib Dem, Abington), said:
"It was a tremendous achievement to be nominated for this award and shows that, after less than three years in control, we are moving the Council in the right direction.
"Having come from an Audit Commission-rated 'Poor' authority in 2007, the Council is now showing the civic leadership and making the real changes Northamptonians want to see.
"I congratulate colleagues in Hull on their achievement. They, like us, are fighting hard to turn Council successes into Parliamentary seats in a few weeks time."
