Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North, Andrew Simpson, has hit the ground running with his campaign team, pledging to 'put Northampton first' as the town's first Liberal MP since 1923.
Supporters put up dozens of garden posters and delivered special leaflets over Easter ahead of Gordon Brown's announcement of election date today.
Andrew, who increased the party's vote share by 7% in 2005, needs a 6% swing from Labour this time to take the seat.
Commenting ahead of his campaign launch at the Lime Trees Hotel on 9th April, Andrew said:
"With Labour and the Conservatives struggling to maintain public confidence in the wake of the expenses and cash-for-influence scandals, this is an unprecedented election.
"Northampton is an independently-minded town with a rich Liberal history and, after being poorly served by successive Labour and Conservative MPs, more and more people are pledging their support for me this time.
"Labour can't win here again after coming third in successive elections in 2007 and 2009. Sally Keeble is struggling to convince local people that 'this time it will be different' and that Labour has something new to offer.
"Equally, people are not convinced by the Conservatives, whose candidate acts as if he should inherit the seat as of right, on the back of David Cameron's coattails.
"The Conservatives' record locally also calls into question their promises of change and their ability to put our public services first.
"I am the only candidate with a consistent track-record of standing up for our town. I have a real stake in Northampton's future and I rely on local services.
"I don't see the job of an MP as being in Westminster, making high-flown speeches. I see it as being here, in my constituency, and using the office of MP to solve people's problems.
"My campaign is about 'putting Northampton first'. Neither Mrs Keeble nor Mr Ellis can say the same - theirs is about doing what their party crib-sheet tells them."
