"she is just like Geoff Hoon in a skirt... she will be another absentee MP" A Labour activist quoted in the Nottingham Evening Post
Reacting to the news that Ashfield Labour Party have selected former TV presenter Gloria De Piero to fight Geoff Hoon's seat at the General Election, Stuart Bray, Head of Campaigns for the Liberal Democrats in the East Midlands said:
"Many people across the Ashfield constituency will be angry and disappointed that Labour bosses have ignored local people and have picked a candidate from outside the area. Once again Labour have shown they take Ashfield for granted. Ms De Piero was born in Bradford and lives in London, she cannot pretend to understand the issues that Ashfield faces.
"The Liberal Democrats have a strong record of beating Labour in this constituency. Last year we won more seats and more votes than Labour and only last month the Liberal Democrats won a seat from Labour in the constituency with a swing of over 22%.
"The decision to parachute a candidate in from outside the area makes the General Election now wide open in this constituency with the Liberal Democrats being the clear challengers to Labour.
"People will face a clear choice between local Liberal Democrat councillor Jason Zadrozny, who was born and bred in Ashfield or another Labour MP who will put party bosses before the needs of local people."
