Transport minister Norman Baker today hailed the successes of Lib Dems in government at a lunchtime discussion with party members in Brussels.
Sharing his experience as a member of the UK coalition, Mr Baker heralded "the biggest expansion in the rail network since Victorian times" and a series of other scores by the Lib Dems on transport and the environment. The junior coalition partner also played a key role in securing pro
gress at international climate negotiations in Durban, through strong action at EU level.
On cooperation in government in general, Baker noted that the coalition between Lib Dems and Tories works better in many ways than "the previous coalition between Blairites and Brownites".
Nevertheless, Lib Dem ministers are fighting every day behind closed doors in Whitehall to shape government policy with Lib Dems priorities. The key will be to convey this to voters, said Mr Baker.
Norman Baker is MP for Lewes and a minister at the Department for Transport. Brussels & Europe Liberal Democrats are the branch for Lib Dems living in Belgium and across the EU. They organise regular political and social events and work together with other liberal parties in Brussels. Today's discussion was kindly hosted at the offices of the European Liberal Democrats.
