The Liberal Democrat Leader of the Official Opposition at County Hall and member of the Police Authority, Cllr Brendan Glynane, has attacked the Conservatives after they forced through a vote on the Police Authority Budget that will lead to the loss of 100 police officers and cuts to 41 PCSOs.
The Police Authority had put forward 2 options on their budget - one which led to massive cuts to frontline policing, and the second, which would have saved at least 36 police officers and 6 PCSOs. After an impasse in which the 7 Conservative Councillors were at odds with the Independent lay-members and the Liberal Democrat and Labour representatives, the Conservatives forced through an amendment which still left cuts to 100 police officers and only postponed some of the PCSO cuts by one year.
Cllr Brendan Glynane said "This is a disgrace. The Conservatives promised to fund PCSOs in their manifesto, and more uniformed police officers on the streets. They have spectacularly gone back on their word today."
"Northamptonshire Conservatives are hell-bent on making our County a more dangerous place to live. They have turned off half of our streetlights, they have cut PCSO funding at both the County and Northampton Borough Council, and today they forced through cuts that will lead to 100 fewer police officers on our streets. Local residents will be outraged at the Conservatives cuts to frontline policing."
