The by-election has been called due to the resignation of the Conservative and Unionist Councillor
Towcester By-Election Attracts National SupportLiberal Democrat Minister for Business Vince Cable made time in his visit to Northamptonshire to meet the Towcester Focus team and give support to Chris Lofts and Lisa Samiotis - Liberal Democrat candidates for the by-elections in Towcester on 9 February.
"One of the things I've always been proud of as a Liberal Democrat, is how effective our Councillors are. The Enterprise Zone I visited this morning is here because of foundations laid by Liberal Democrats - foundations, I am told, the Conservatives on Northamptonshire County Council opposed. Up to 17,000 jobs could be created because Liberal Democrats didn't back down."
He continued, "Speaking to Chris about the work he and the FOCUS team have been doing in Towcester I see the same thing; hard work and genuine concern for the town. I know Chris will make a fantastic county councillor for Towcester - it sounds like it's time they had a truly local, hard working representative."
Riverside Centre, Library and Local Police at threat from Conservative Cuts
The Conservatives running Northamptonshire County Council have announced plans to reduce vital services. They plan to slash funding to the Police Service, Fire Service, Libraries, Children's Services and Adult Social Care. Around £77 million pounds of cuts over the next four years. Lib Dem Councillor Martin Johns says: "These Conservative cuts are deep and would mean a reduction of £1.2 million to services in Towcester. They will affect everyone in our town."
Councillor Chris Lofts comments: "The Conservatives plan to close the Riverside Centre in Towcester that provides services for young people and adults with learning difficulties. The future of both the town's library and registrar's office are uncertain."
Liberal Democrats on the County Council are trying to protect these services and have made sensible and affordable alternative suggestions for protecting vital services. The Conservatives however seem hell bent on slashing them. Towcester needs a strong voice at the County Council to fight for our local services.
Having already turned off half the street lights in Towcester, causing real concerns about rising crime and public safety issues the Conservatives now plan to cut funding for Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in Towcester.
Liberal Democrat candidate: Lisa Samiotis. Party defending seat: Conservative and Unionist Party
Lisa Samiotis says: "The elderly and vulnerable are now feeling the impact of the dark footpaths and poorly lit streets in Towcester. Some lights could remain turned off, but many others should be put back on..
