From Liz Pym

I agree that the BBC local radio and BBC local regional TV are protected. I do not think that local TV run by private concerns is viable. I once lived in Milton Keynes and there was once a local TV station not run by the BBC. It was rubbish and in the end it closed down - there was not enough material to sustain it and keep people interested as concentrated purely on MK area.

Where I live our local BBC radio is Northampton and Banbury. When I am travelling the BBC local radio stations keep you inform about hold ups on the roads wherever you are in the UK. I get Oxford News cum BBC South on Regional TV and if I scroll to the 800s on my freeview I can get BBC Midlands and BBC East if the reception is good. I do not wish to lose these options. Our village has its own TV transmitter linked to Sutton Coalfield.

Also concerning railways, did anyone see the Panorama TV programme on Monday about the cost of our railways. It appears that Network railway overcharges on work done on the railways. This should be looked into. An interview was done with Alan Shooter who has just retired from being CEO of Chiltern Railways. They have up-graded the lines at no cost to the tax payer using their option to finance the work. It transpired that Newtwork rail had quoted double what the quote they had got for the work to be done. Chiltern Railways now have fast non-stop trains from Birmingham to London. My nearest station is Banbury and I have no complaints about Chiltern Railway. One advantage of Chiltern Railway they have a long contract and made sure that they had more control when they won the franchise. The programme argued that all franchises should be done like Chiltern Railway. Cross Country are now also run by the same company as Chiltern Railway. Oxford customers who were having a bad time due to work at Reading station should find things will improve as Chiltern Railway has taken over the line from Oxford to Bicester Town from First Great Western and building a link into their line taking their passengers to Marylebone. Also came out that Customer Services was better for Chiltern Railway - the host at Warwick Parkway Station which Chiltern Railway built, gets gifts from the passengers. The Lib Dems should follow what Chiltern Railways have done. Also the Lib Dems need to look into the excessive costs Network Rail are charging and allow for longer leases on the rail franchises.
