George Cunningham has just been selected by local Liberal Democrats as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate to fight the North Thanet constituency during the 2015 General Election.

"Margate and Herne Bay need investment for their rejuvenation and for people to gain jobs. This will be the focus of my candidacy and as a MP if elected", said George Cunningham. One of the first challenges will be Manston airport, working alongside his colleague South Thanet Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Russ Timpson, to save it for the local community - and the nation.

Having begun his career as a British Army Regular Officer, 57 year old George Cunningham worked for British Petroleum and British Telecom before travelling the world as a diplomat both for the United Nations and the European Union. He is determined, having walked with a backpack the length of Africa for charity for more than two years in his youth. Much of the focus of his life has been on helping young people get on with life.

George Cunningham is now settling in Sandwich, while working during the week in Brussels, to serve Thanet better. He will be active in the Europe debate in the run-up to the 22nd May European elections. "We need the maximum turnout at these elections" he said "to push back the forces of extremism and look to a better future in the real world". He believes that security and defence continues to be important for Britain and Europe.

George is married to Florence. His two children, Constance and Curran both went to school in Sturry.

Chairman of the selection committee, Birchington Councillor Bill Furness said: "It was entirely appropriate that George's selection as candidate for the party occurred in Birchington - to take on UKIP and the Tories in their heartland and the constituency as a whole. We are very proud to have him on board his extensive knowledge of how Europe works and all his practical experience will put him in good stead with the electorate".
