Theresa May's honeymoon as Prime Minister is over in this region as the Lib Dems win two seats at the expense of the Tories.

In Northampton, veteran campaigner Brian Markham seized the Westone Ward from the Tories gaining 583 votes compared to the Tories 319. This represents a huge 33% swing to the Lib Dems compared to 2015.

In Hinckley and Bosworth, a Parish By-election in Burbage saw long-standing Lib Dem County and Borough Councillor Keith Lynch make a come-back onto the Parish Council in a ward where the Tories topped the poll last May. The local Lib Dem Campaign Team, led by PPC Michael Mullaney achieved a swing of almost 10%.

The two results added to Jeremy Corbyn's woes with Labour trailing a poor third in both cases.

East Mids Chairman Stuart Bray, who represents Burbage on Leicestershire County Council, said: "I would like to congratulate both Brian and Keith on their sensational victories. Both campaigns were based on solid traditional campaigning techniques of talking to voters, listening to their concerns and lots of hard-hitting literature and direct mail.

"I would like to thank everyone who helped out. The teams in both Northampton and Bosworth worked incredibly hard and a particular thanks to those people who travelled from elsewhere in the region to help out.

"I look forward to next year's County Council elections where I expect to see the Lib Dems making further gains right across the region."

The results in full were:

Northampton Borough Council, Westone Ward.
Brian Markham (Lib Dem) 583
Conservative 319
Labour 270
