John Marriott has represented parts of North Hykeham on various councils since 1987. In 2001 he succeeded Frank Witney as the County Councillor for the Hykeham Forum Division. He is currently Leader of the Lib Dem Group.

John grew up in Leicester. A keen sportsman, he played rugby union for England Schools at Under 19 level, Cambridge University and Leicester RFC. He also played water polo for Leicestershire and Cambridge and was awarded a Half Blue. John pursued a teaching career after graduation, firstly in Newark, Notts. and, following his marriage to Linda, who is also now a North Hykeham Town Councillor, he taught in Canada, Germany and Yorkshire before becoming Head of Languages at the North Kesteven School in 1977, a post from which he took early retirement in 1999. John and Linda have two grown up sons.

He was a North Hykeham Town Councillor for 24 years and a North Kesteven District Councillor from 1987 to 1999 and again from 2001 to 2007. He was a member of the Lincolnshire Police Authority from 2001 to 2009. In the 1997 General Election he was the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for the Sleaford and North Hykeham Constituency.

John has been involved in many campaigns over the years and has personally delivered many thousand copies of FOCUS, the newsletter that has been keeping the residents of North Hykeham regularly informed since 1986.

Besides politics and sport, John is particularly interested in local history and nine years ago co-wrote a history of North Hykeham in the 20th Century, which sold out twice. A new bigger edition, called 'The North Hykeham Story', appeared in 2012. He also published a short history of the Town Council in 2004. For six years he was Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Hykeham Christmas Market.

On another historical note, you might be aware that, for some years now, John has been part of the campaign for the statue of King George III, which used to stand on Dunston Pillar, to be completely restored and reerected, possibly in the grounds of Lincoln Castle.
