Lucy Care is instinctively a campaigner. She is someone who makes things happen, bringing enthusiasm and energy to campaigns often centred on her home city of Derby. These have included giving local people a voice over plans to remove inner city recycling and ensuring that the public have access through Derby train station. She also takes active roles working with others for community initiates such as Littleover's 'Picnic in the Park', in support of train-maker Bombardier and local cycle campaigners, Derby Cycling Group.
Lucy's political career started back in the early 1990s when she was the first Liberal Democrat councillor elected in Derby. Her council career continued for 17 years until 2010, when she didn't stand for re-election. During the intervening years, she became known as a responsive and committed local representative. This period included four years as a cabinet member on Derby City Council (2003-5 and 2008-10) with responsibilities in the area of transport, planning and environment. She was also a member of the Regional Assembly.
Professionally, Lucy is a chartered engineer, having worked for Courtaulds at Spondon after graduating from Durham University. She is a strong supporter of engineering and manufacturing, and is incensed by attempts to downplay the importance of vocational qualifications and skills: society needs these at least as much as academic ones. Lucy is a Team Science Candidate
Lucy was only 2258 votes from winning Derby North in the 2010 election, and needs a swing of only 2.5% this time. It would seem appropriate for high tech Derby, with its strong manufacturing tradition, to be represented in parliament by a chartered engineer. Lucy would be only the second ever such qualified woman to enter parliament.
Lucy is often identified as a committed environmentalist, in part as she is often seen cycling around Derby. But she says "The environment is just one strand needed to achieve sustainability, the economy and social considerations are just as important. All three must work together for a successful society."
Lucy is married with three adult children.
Lucy was born in Derby and has lived here most of her life. She currently lives in Littleover with her husband Ian, who works at Rolls-Royce. She has three grown-up children. She is an engineer by profession. Lucy has a strong reputation for getting things done in Derby. She is an experienced former City and County Councillor.
Lucy says, "I'm delighted to have been selected to stand in Derby North again Despite my now considerable experience in politics, I continue to think of myself first and foremost as an engineer and mother. Since 2010 I have continued to campaign in Derby, working with other groups or initiating campaigns to help give people a voice. I offer people my energy, enthusiasm and commitment, to help build a fairer society with a strong economy and which cares for its environment in the long term.
