Philip Smith is someone who makes things happen, bringing enthusiasm and energy to campaigns, These have included giving local people a voice over plans to build on our green spaces, exposing the fact that King's Mill Hospital is drowning in debt because Labour borrowed the money to re-build it from the private sector and fighting for a safer, greener, cleaner and stronger Ashfield.

Phil's political career started back in the early 1990s when he was one of the first Liberal Democrat councillors elected in the East Midlands. His council career continued until 2011. During these years, he became known as a responsive and committed local campaigner. This included eight years as a cabinet member on Mansfield District Council and four years as Deputy Executive Mayor. In this time, he was responsible for environmental issues and the council's corporate management. One of Phil's personal priorities will be to scrap the unpopular Police and Crime Commissioners and re-invest the money in front line policing.

Professionally, Phil worked in IT for 15 years ending up as a senior test analyst. He started his own business providing training and admin services to small business. In 2011 Phil and his wife Jan opened a florist shop in Sutton-in-Ashfield serving the local community.

Phil is actively involved with the local community and has been a local magistrate since 1999. He is heavily involved in his local church and is a current church warden.

Phil is married with two adult children.

At the last General Election, there was only 192 votes between the Liberal Democrats and Labour. The Conservatives were miles behind and UKIP were in sixth place. If elected in May, I will be an MP who puts Ashfield and Eastwood first. People round here tell me they want positive change and I will deliver that. I will be an MP who puts us first. It's about time. A succession of Labour MPs have taken us for granted. I am the only candidate capable of finally ending the Labour domination that has not served us well for a generation.

I am a local man, a husband and father of 2. I run a Florists in Stanton Hill with my wife Jan. As a local businessman, I am passionate about the regeneration of our District Centres. I am also a Magistrate and have been for over a decade. I am passionate about leading the fight against crime. One of my priorities is to scrap the Police and Crime Commissioner's Office. Putting politics at the top of our police force has been an unmitigated disaster. I know that the Labour Party support me in these plans and whoever wins should be handing Paddy Tipping his P45. The money saved should then be used to put more police on the streets of Ashfield.

I am proud that only the Liberal Democrats have a fully costed plan, approved by the NHS to invest £8 billion extra a year in our health service. The Conservatives can't say where their money comes from. Labour have only pledged £2.5 billion and is typical of their lack of concern for our health service. If elected, I will move heaven and earth to get as much of this extra money invested in King's Mill Hospital. Our hospital is at crisis point - drowning in debt, closing wards and has no Chief Executive. This is because the previous Labour Government borrowed the money to re-build the hospital back in 2005. Gordon Brown, supported by Geoff Hoon personally intervened and insisted that we borrowed the money from millionaires and hedge fund owners instead of using public funds. This decision is directly responsible for all the problems at King's Mill.

Liberal Democrats put the country first when entering coalition in 2010. Remember Liam Byrne's note - "There's no money left" This 'joke' went to the heart of what Labour do in Government. Spend and spend like there's no tomorrow. A future Lib Dem Government will spend less than Labour and cut less than the Tories. In Government, we have created 6330 brand new apprentices in Ashfield, invested £12.5 million extra in local schools and put £825 into the pockets of nearly 50,000 local people through raising the tax threshold and much more. We have also reduced unemployment by nearly 25% round here. Since 2010, there are now more young people in work, we've reduced long term unemployment and have more women in jobs than ever before.

Labour, who left us on the brink of bankruptcy bang on about the cost of living. The facts are that people would rather have a job. I am proud of that and if elected, I will continue to build on these improvements. I will also campaign to improve the lives of the poorest. I want to scrap the 'bedroom tax', introduced by Labour in both the public AND private sectors. I want to continue supporting pensioners who make up 20% of Ashfield residents. Pensioners have had the biggest pay rises ever because of the Lib Dems in Government. I will ensure pensioners will never, ever again have to put up with the insulting 75p pay rise that wouldn't even bought a copy of this paper.
